Jonny Bairstow, opening the batting for the first time this season, gave SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) a brilliant start against Mumbai Indians with a quick-fire knock during the run-chase in the Indian Premier League clash between the two sides on Saturday evening.
Mumbai Indians eventually went on to win the game by 13 runs but at one moment Bairstow did make it look like a cakewalk for Sunrisers Hyderabad.
In response to Mumbai’s 150/5, the SunRisers Hyderabad went back to their old formula of opening with David Warner and Jonny Bairstow. The SRH duo played the first couple of overs meticulously and could only fetch five runs. However, Bairstow got his eye in and started taking Mumbai bowlers to the cleaners from the third over. The Englishman scored 18 runs off the third over bowled by Trent Boult.
Bairstow blasted 43 off just 22 balls as SRH raced to 67 for no loss after seven overs. Just when it seemed that Bairstow would take the game away from the defending champions, the England opener was dismissed in the most anticlimactic manner.
It all happened on the second ball of the eighth over, Krunal Pandya bowled a short-of-a-length delivery and Bairstow went a tad too deep inside the crease in order to slog-sweep it over midwicket, with his back leg disturbing the stumps behind him leading to his departure.
Twitter was abuzz after Jonny Bairstow’s hit wicket. Fans took to micro-blogging site to share memes on Bairtstow’s unfortunate wicket. Here’s a look at a few reactions.
