According to the reports, there is the possibility that the Women’s Challenger Series, called ‘Mini IPL’ of women’s cricket, will be played in the UAE from November 4 to 9.
A top Indian Premier League official confirmed this on Wednesday. It is expected that the teams will be flying to the UAE by the second week of October. After reaching UAE, they will undergo a mandatory six-day quarantine period, just like it was for the men’s tournament. The venues for the tournament are yet to be finalised, but there is a possibility that it may be held at a single venue.
“Yes, the dates of the tournament have been finalised. It will be held from November 4 to 9. There will be a single round-robin league between the three teams Trailblazers, Velocity and Supernovas along with the final. In all four matches will be held,” a senior IPL official privy to the development told PTI.
Women’s cricket has come to a complete standstill in India due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which has been criticized a lot. However, Saurabh Ganguly, President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, has repeatedly said that there will be a tournament of three teams, which was confirmed by a senior official in the UAE.
“The final has been slotted on November 9 as we didn’t want to schedule on the day of the men’s final. There is enormous interest for the women’s event and it’s only commercially prudent that it is separated from men’s event,” the official said.
The BCCI announced last week a new selection committee for women’s cricket under the chairmanship of former spinner Neetu David, who will now elect the three teams.
The source said that if the women cricketers have not played for a long time, they will be given full time to practice. Australia and England’s top cricketers will not be available due to the Women’s Big Bash League being held at the same time.
“The girls haven’t had training for such a long time and they would need to be given adequate time for net practice,” the source said.
