With speculations over Rohit Sharma’s absence for the 4-Test match series in Australia growing, the team management could get Shreyas Iyer in as cover for the Mumbai Indians skipper who is recovering from a hamstring injury.
As per reports of Times of India, it is believed that the 25-year-old has been asked to stay back after the limited-overs internationals.
There is no doubt that the Indian Test team will be weakened in the absence of Virat Kohli. Although earlier it was being said that if Virat went back to India after playing the first Test match, then Rohit Sharma will remain in the team so that Indian batting will not make much difference, but according to the latest report, Rohit Sharma will not be available for the Test series against Australia as he is not fully fit to play a game.
Rohit Sharma’s failure to join the Test team is a big setback for India as he has the experience of playing on Australian soil, and if he were in the team, Ajinkya Rahane could have got advice from him in the absence of Virat Kohli.
Now according to the BCCI source, both Rohit Sharma and Ishant Sharma will not be able to be a part of the Test team, on the other hand, the team management can now place Shreyas Iyer in the Test team as cover of Rohit Sharma. Shreyas is currently with Team India and is part of the ODI and T20 teams.
The 25-year-old has not played any Test match for the Indian team so far. If he gets a place in the Test team against Australia and manages to make it to the final eleven for a Test match, then he will make a Test debut for India.
Talking about Shreyas’s ODI career, he has scored 748 runs in 18 ODIs at an average of 49.86 which includes one century and 8 half-centuries. On the other hand Shreyas Iyer has scored 417 runs in 22 T20 Internationals at an average of 27.80 which includes 2 fifties.
Shreyas Iyer also led the Delhi Capitals to their maiden IPL final this year which must have helped his case with the selectors.
