Royal Challengers Bangalore opener Devdutt Padikkal continued his red hot form ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 with a fourth consecutive hundred to help Karanataka pile up a massive total of 338 in the first inning against Kerala.
Young Karanataka batsman had notched his career-best 152 against Odisha and followed it up with 126* versus Kerala and 145* versus Railways and now in the 2nd Quarter-Final against Kerala, he again dominated and smashed 101 runs.
Padikkal faced 119 balls before completing his fourth consecutive hundred in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. While smashing 101, he smashed 10 fours and 2 sixes.
A lot of players before and after Virat in 2008-09 did smash three hundred apiece in the history of the Vijay Hazare Trophy but none of them got their 4th ton in the same tournament.
Devdutt Padikkal Equals Virat Kohli’s Record
Till now Virat Kohli was the only player who managed to smash 4 consecutive hundreds in a single season of Vijay Hazare Trophy (2008-2009). Kohli’s first ton was 102 from 113 balls against Jammu & Kashmir where the Delhi team won by 112 runs. In the following match against Punjab, the Delhi batsman smashed an unbeaten 119 from only 110 balls by putting on an unbeaten 124-run stand with Rajat Bhatia for the 4th wicket. This was easily Kohli’s easiest ton of the tournament as Delhi were chasing only 203 which was tracked down in only 38.5 overs.
Virat’s highest score of the season was 124 which came in only 82 balls against the Haryana team with 9 fours and 7 sixes. Delhi finished with 364/6 on the board with help of Kohli’s ton while Haryana was bowled out for only 225. Kohli’s 4th and last ton of the season were 114 from 93 balls against Railways who posted 305/6. Kohli got out 82 runs away from a win with 19.2 overs still to be played. Delhi eventually reached the target but not before losing 8 wickets. Kohli stood out as the leading-run getting off the 2008-09 Vijay Hazare Trophy with 534 runs.
And now Devdutt Padikkal has equalled Virat Kohli’s record of hitting 4 consecutive hundreds in a single season of Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Leading Run-Scorer of Vijay Hazare Trophy 2020/21
Padikkal is now the leading run-scorer of the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy edition by a fair distance. So far, he has racked up 673 runs from six games at an astronomical average of 168.25 and strike rate of 95.59. The tally includes as many as four centuries and two half-centuries. Padikkal hits massive 61 boundaries and 20 sixes.
