Shubman Gill Expected to Be Named India’s Test Captain as BCCI Prepares Major Announcement
Shubman Gill is likely to be India’s next Test captain, with an official announcement expected alongside the squad reveal for the England tour

In a major transition for Indian cricket, Shubman Gill is poised to become the next Test captain, replacing Rohit Sharma, who retired from the format on May 7. The official announcement is expected on May 23 or 24, alongside the squad selection for the England Test series, according to sources close to the BCCI.
Despite early speculation suggesting Jasprit Bumrah might take charge, selectors have opted for Gill’s long-term potential and leadership experience. The 23-year-old is already the vice-captain in white-ball cricket and currently leads Gujarat Titans in the IPL, showcasing maturity and tactical acumen.
Gill has reportedly met with team management to discuss the captaincy vision and responsibilities. He is seen as the centerpiece of India’s future Test core.
Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant is expected to be appointed as vice-captain, signaling a new leadership era. Bumrah remains an essential figure but is not under consideration for any leadership role due to ongoing injury management protocols.
The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee also deliberated KL Rahul for the vice-captaincy, but ruled him out due to inconsistent red-ball form and age, favoring a younger leadership group that can serve India over the long term.
The new leadership structure is part of a broader reset following the retirements of Rohit Sharma, R. Ashwin, and potentially Virat Kohli, who is widely expected to announce his Test retirement soon.
