Sandeep Lamichhane Proven Innocent, Open for T20 World Cup 2024 Selection

Patan High Court clears Nepali leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane's conviction, opening doors for his cricket return

In a dramatic turn of events, the Patan High Court today overturned the conviction of star Nepali leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane. Lamichhane had been found guilty of rape by the Kathmandu District Court in December 2023.

This verdict clears the path for Lamichhane’s potential return to cricket, including possible selection for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024.

The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) had previously suspended Lamichhane following his conviction.

“We are aware of the High Court’s decision,” said a CAN spokesperson.

“The association will convene to discuss the implications and determine the next steps regarding Mr. Lamichhane’s cricketing future.”

The rape accusation against Lamichhane remains a sensitive issue in Nepal. While Lamichhane has always maintained his innocence, the details of the case are subject to a confidentiality order.

Lamichhane’s return to the national team would be a major boost for Nepal. The 23-year-old is considered one of the country’s most talented cricketers and has always delivered for his team.

Sandeep has played 144 T20s in which he picked 206 wickets at a brilliant economy rate of 6.38. He’s also contributed with the bat, scoring 127 runs in 41 T20 innings. His return, if selected, would be a major boost for Nepal‘s World Cup campaign.
