LA Knight Riders beat Washington Freedom by one run to win their first MLC title, with Narine and Holder starring in a thrilling final.
LA Knight Riders won their first-ever Major League Cricket (MLC) title with a dramatic one-run victory over Washington Freedom in the final at the Oakland Coliseum. It was LAKR’s first appearance in the MLC playoffs, and they made it count by ending the dominance of MI New York and Washington Freedom, who had shared the league’s first three titles.
LAKR posted 164 after recovering from a middle-order collapse. Andre Fletcher gave the innings a solid start with 47, while Colin Munro made 40. Saif Badar’s dismissal triggered a slowdown, but Unmukt Chand Tromp added a valuable 39 to help the team reach a competitive total.
Washington’s chase got off to the worst possible start as Sunil Narine ripped through the top order. The veteran spinner finished with superb figures of 3 for 13, removing Mitchell Owen, Rachin Ravindra and Steve Smith to leave Freedom struggling at 29 for 3.
Jason Holder then backed up Narine’s spell with an impressive 3 for 31. During his spell, Holder also reached a major career milestone by claiming his 400th wicket in T20 cricket, adding another memorable moment to the final.
Andries Gous and Nikhil Chaudhary steadied the innings with a 65-run partnership that kept Washington in the contest. Just when LAKR looked to be back in control, Obus Pienaar produced a stunning counterattack.
Pienaar blasted 53 runs from just 24 balls, striking cleanly all around the ground and dragging the chase into the final over. His fearless innings nearly completed an unlikely comeback and put the pressure firmly back on LAKR.
The final over brought even more drama. Van Schalkwyk dismissed Pienaar at a crucial stage, but Washington still had a chance off the last ball. With two runs needed, a run-out on the final delivery sealed a remarkable one-run win for LA Knight Riders.
The experienced duo of Narine and Holder, who together have taken more than 1,000 T20 wickets in their careers, proved the difference on the biggest stage. Their early breakthroughs gave LAKR the edge, and despite Pienaar’s unforgettable late charge, the Knight Riders held their nerve to lift their maiden MLC trophy.
