R Ashwin Faces Ball-Tampering Allegations in TNPL; Madurai Panthers File Complaint

R Ashwin’s TNPL team has been accused of ball-tampering by Madurai Panthers, with TNPL now asking for proof to back the claim.

India spinner R Ashwin has found himself at the centre of controversy after the Madurai Panthers accused him and his TNPL team, Dindigul Dragons, of ball-tampering. The incident took place during their match on June 14 in the Tamil Nadu Premier League.

Madurai Alleges Use of Chemical-Treated Towels

In a letter submitted to the TNPL, Madurai Panthers claimed that the Dindigul team used towels with chemicals on them to tamper with the ball. They said the ball started making a metallic sound and felt heavier when it hit the bat.

Madurai’s COO, S Mahesh, wrote that even after being warned, the Dindigul players continued to use the same towels. He called it a “serious case of ball tampering” and demanded action from the organisers.

TNPL Responds, Demands Evidence

The TNPL has accepted the complaint, even though it came after the 24-hour deadline for lodging grievances. Tournament organiser Prasanna said the league has asked Madurai to submit proof of the allegations. If they fail to do so, they may face penalties themselves.

“If we find any truth in the claim, an independent committee will be formed to investigate. But without strong evidence, it is wrong to accuse players and franchises,” Prasanna told The Indian Express.

What Happened in the Match?

The game in question was delayed due to rain. Madurai batted first and scored 150/8. Dindigul chased the target in just 12.3 overs, winning by 9 wickets. Ashwin didn’t take any wickets but scored 49 runs as an opener.

Because of the wet conditions, the TNCA provides towels to teams. But the rule is that the ball can only be dried in front of the umpires.

According to TNPL official Kannan, the umpires checked the ball multiple times during the match and did not notice anything unusual. Kannan also asked Madurai Panthers to submit any material proof of their claim.
