Jasprit Bumrah Reveals Why He Said No to Test Captaincy

Jasprit Bumrah explains why he declined India’s Test captaincy, cites workload management ahead of England series

As India prepare to begin their five-match test series against England in Leeds, Jasprit Bumrah has opened up about why he did not want to be India’s Test captain.

With Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and R Ashwin retiring from Test cricket, many expected Bumrah to lead the red-ball team. However, the selectors named Shubman Gill as captain, while Bumrah continues as a senior member of the squad.

Bumrah Prioritises Fitness Over Captaincy

Bumrah revealed in an interview with Sky Sports Cricket that he himself asked the BCCI not to consider him for the captaincy. During IPL 2025, he had a discussion with the board about managing his workload across a five-match Test series.

“There’s no drama behind it,” Bumrah said. “I had a clear conversation with BCCI and told them I won’t be able to give all five matches, so it wouldn’t be fair on the team if I led for a few games and missed others.”

He added that he had spoken to his doctors and trainers, who advised him to be smart about his body. Bumrah had suffered a back issue earlier this year during the fifth Test against Australia and missed the Champions Trophy. He returned to action during the IPL after missing the first few matches.

Leadership Role in a Different Way

Even though Bumrah won’t be the official captain, he said he still wants to help the team with his experience.

“You don’t need the captain’s tag to lead. I want to contribute as a senior player and help the team grow,” he said.

He also mentioned that Test cricket is still his top priority, and he is committed to performing in all formats. However, he confirmed that he will only play a maximum of three Tests in the England series to manage his workload.

India Begin New Chapter Under Gill

India are entering a new phase in Test cricket under Shubman Gill. The young captain will be under pressure, especially with India’s recent transitions and his average of just 14.66 from three Tests in England.

The BCCI has shown faith in Gill’s leadership as they focus on long-term planning. Bumrah, along with KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja, will play a key role in supporting the young squad.

As per coach Gautam Gambhir, it is not yet decided which three Tests Bumrah will play. “We’ll plan as we go. The first Test is confirmed for me, rest will depend on the situation,” Bumrah said.
