IND vs NZ 2026: India Treat New Zealand T20Is as Final Trial Ahead of T20 World Cup 2026
India test combinations vs New Zealand as Samson, Iyer, Kishan, Surya and Rinku fight for roles before T20 World Cup 2026.
India’s five-match T20I series against New Zealand is more than just another bilateral contest. These are the last games before India defend the T20 World Cup at home in 2026, and every role is under the scanner.
The core XI is largely locked in, but the team management still has a few key calls to make. These matches are about form, balance, and how players fit specific roles on different pitches across India.
Sanju Samson gets a clear run at the top, finally back in his best T20I role as opener. After years of moving around the order, this series is his chance to quickly remind everyone why he belongs there.
The most interesting contest is for the slot left open by Tilak Varma. Shreyas Iyer comes in with a big IPL season behind him and offers a right-hand option in the upper middle order. Ishan Kishan, meanwhile, brings left-hand variety and wicketkeeping, fresh off a strong Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
India’s thinking is clear. Kishan is seen as Samson’s backup at the top, while Iyer is the next in line for the No. 4 or No. 5 role behind Suryakumar and Tilak when fit.
All eyes will also be on captain Suryakumar Yadav. He has not scored a fifty in his last 22 T20I innings and has struggled against pace, especially full lengths. Even so, the team continues to back him as a central figure.
At the back end, Rinku Singh remains India’s best pure finisher on numbers and impact. However, constant reshuffles at the top and in the keeping roles have squeezed his place more than once.
Shivam Dube offers a different option. His medium pace and ability to hit spin make him valuable on slower pitches. Picking Dube can also help India play an extra spinner like Kuldeep without weakening the batting.
One selection question may already be answered. Harshit Rana impressed in the recent ODI series with his new-ball control and handy lower-order hitting, and looks set to lock down the No. 8 spot.
A possible XI for Nagpur reflects this flexibility, with combinations changing based on pitch and opposition. For India, this series is a live selection lab as they fine-tune roles for a home title defence.
