IND vs ENG: First Time in 148 Years! India Creates Embarrassing Test Record After Headingley Defeat
India lose first Test at Headingley despite five centuries, setting a historic record as England top WTC standings
Team India lost the first Test match against England at Headingley, Leeds. England chased down a big target of 371 runs on the final day and won the game with five wickets in hand.
Ben Duckett scored a brilliant 149, while Joe Root and debutant Jamie Smith stayed unbeaten with half-centuries to guide England home.
India Creates a Rare and Unwanted Record
Despite scoring five centuries in the match, India could not win. KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Rishabh Pant (again) all made hundreds across two innings. But it still wasn’t enough.
This was the first time in 148 years of Test cricket history that a team lost a Test match after scoring five individual centuries.
Previously, no team had ever lost after this many individual tons in a match. It has only happened six times in history that a team scored five centuries in a Test.
But in all those cases, the team either won or drew. India became the first team to lose despite such a big batting effort.
Before this, the worst was when Australia lost in 1928-29 despite scoring four centuries. But five hundreds and still losing? That’s a first and not one India would be proud of.
England On Top of WTC Standings
With this win, England got 12 points in the World Test Championship and jumped to the top of the table with a 100% points percentage (PCT).
Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are next, with 4 points each after their drawn match. India, surprisingly, is now at the bottom of the table with 0 points and 0% PCT.
Only four teams have played so far in this WTC cycle, but India now has a mountain to climb in the remaining four matches of the series.
