Gautam Gambhir Leaves England Tour Midway Due to Medical Emergency
Gautam Gambhir has returned to India from England after his mother suffered a heart attack and was admitted to the ICU.

Just days ahead of the much-awaited Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy starting June 20, Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir has returned to India due to a medical emergency in the family. As per a report by RevSportz, Gambhir’s mother suffered a heart attack and is currently being treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
The incident has come at a crucial time, with India set to begin their new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle with the Test series against England. The development has led to a brief interruption in Gambhir’s preparation plans as he takes time off to be with his family.
Gambhir’s First England Tour As Coach Interrupted
Gautam Gambhir, who took over the head coach role from Rahul Dravid following the T20 World Cup last year, is yet to settle fully into his new responsibilities. His tenure so far has seen mixed results—losses in the Test series against New Zealand and Australia, but also a high in the form of India’s title win at the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
This ongoing England tour was Gambhir’s first as a member of the coaching staff overseas. He was expected to use the India A warm-up matches and the intra-squad game to finalise strategies along with new Test captain Shubman Gill before the five-match Test series begins.
India A Build-Up Continues Without Head Coach
India A have already played two warm-up matches against England Lions, both of which ended in draws. The final warm-up fixture will be an intra-squad game between India A and players from the main Test squad, which is now crucial for finalising the playing XI for the series opener.
With Gambhir temporarily away, it remains to be seen how the coaching responsibilities are shared during this key phase. The entire team and management are reportedly standing by their coach and wishing for his mother’s speedy recovery.
