Fakhar Zaman Fined for Showing Dissent in Tri Series Final
Fakhar Zaman fined and handed a demerit point for dissent in the Tri Series final after arguing with umpires.
Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman has been fined 10 percent of his match fee for a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct during the Tri Series final against Sri Lanka on 29 November.
The incident happened in the 19th over when Fakhar was given out. He showed clear dissent, arguing with the on field umpires and delaying the game. This was ruled as a violation of Article 2.8, which deals with players protesting an umpire’s decision.
Fakhar accepted the sanction and did not request a hearing. He also received one demerit point. This is his first demerit point in the last 24 months.
The charge was laid by the on field and TV umpires. ICC match referee Reon King confirmed the penalty after reviewing the footage and Fakhar’s admission.
Level 1 offences are the mildest category in the ICC system. Even then, demerit points can become a problem if they pile up. A player who gets four or more points in a 24 month period can face suspension points that lead to a ban.
The ICC keeps demerit points on a player’s record for two years before they drop off. So Fakhar will be watched more closely now, especially if he has another heated moment on the field.
This episode came in a high pressure final between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, where emotions were running high. Fakhar’s reaction crossed the ICC line on acceptable behaviour and resulted in a light but meaningful penalty.
