Handshake Drama Could Follow Women’s India-Pakistan Game? Deepti Sharma Answers
Deepti Sharma breaks silence on the India-Pakistan handshake controversy ahead of the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025, scheduled for October 5 in Colombo.
The handshake controversy that erupted during the India-Pakistan clash in the Men’s Asia Cup 2025 is already spilling over into discussions around the upcoming Women’s ODI World Cup.
India’s senior all-rounder Deepti Sharma has now weighed in as the arch-rivals prepare to face off on October 5 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
The issue began when Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav and his team chose not to shake hands with their Pakistani counterparts after a seven-wicket win in Dubai.
The move, which SKY later said was a mark of solidarity with victims of the Pahalgam terror attack, drew sharp criticism from across the border and has since dominated cricketing headlines.
Asked if the same stance could carry over into the women’s tournament, Deepti offered a measured response.
“That match is still a long way away, and we will decide what to do when the time comes. Right now, we are not focused on the Asia Cup as our main focus is on the Australia series,” she said.
India’s women will meet Australia in a high-profile ODI series before turning their attention to the World Cup.
