West Indies Registers a Hard-Fought 5-Wicket Win Over Papua New Guinea

West Indies beat Papua New Guinea by five-wickets in T20 World Cup 2024.

The co-hosts, West Indies, secured a narrow five-wicket victory over Papua New Guinea (PNG) in a tense encounter that opened their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign in Guyana on Sunday. While the win secured valuable points, it was far from a convincing display by the Windies.

PNG, despite being significant underdogs, put up a spirited fight. Openers Johnson Charles’ early dismissal for West Indies gave them a glimmer of hope. A missed LBW decision against Nicholas Pooran could have swung the match further in their favour. However, Brandon King’s aggressive knock, coupled with Pooran finding some form later, put the Windies in control.

The tide turned dramatically with the quick dismissals of both set batters. The West Indies’ middle order collapsed, losing wickets at regular intervals. Credit must be given to Roston Chase, who anchored the innings with a crucial 42 off 27 balls. The arrival of man-in-form Andre Russell at the crease accelerated the scoring, sealing the win for the Windies.

Papua New Guinea Early Struggles

Earlier, opting to bowl first, the West Indies bowlers restricted PNG to a modest 136/8. PNG’s innings began with shaky batting, thanks to a potent West Indies bowling attack. Romario Shepherd and Akeal Hosein struck early blows, removing openers Ura and Siaka respectively. PNG skipper Vala showed some promise before being caught by Roston Chase himself.

Sese Bau emerged as the lone bright spark for PNG, his gritty 50 (43 balls) providing much-needed stability. However, after his dismissal, PNG’s batting collapsed, and they could only manage a below-par total. West Indies’ decision to utilize spin heavily proved effective, with Hosein, Fin Allen, and Roston Chase restricting the run flow.

While the West Indies secured the win, their performance raises questions about their batting form. PNG, on the other hand, deserves credit for their spirited display against the host team, that too at their home turf.
