Shoaib Malik criticises PCB's mid-series changes and warns that pressure and social media criticism could create fear among players.
Former Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik has criticised the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for making major changes in the middle of the Test series against England.
Pakistan fell 2-0 behind after heavy defeats in the first two Tests. The PCB then released seven players from the squad and made changes to the coaching staff ahead of the final Test at Edgbaston.
Mohammad Rizwan and Imam-ul-Haq were among the players released from the squad. The PCB also replaced head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul with Mike Hesson and Ashley Noffke.
Malik questioned the decision to overhaul the squad and coaching setup while the series was still in progress. He said national players who have represented Pakistan deserve respect, regardless of their recent performances.
“The players dropped from the squad are still our national cricketers who have served Pakistan. Phrases like ‘sent on the first flight back’ are disrespectful,” Malik said.
The former Pakistan captain also felt accountability should begin with those responsible for the wider problems in the system, rather than players who have had limited opportunities.
“Accountability should start with those who broke the system, not with players, especially those who were on the bench or have played 2-3 Test matches,” he added.
Malik further argued that accountability should be addressed after a tour instead of making drastic changes during an ongoing series. He believes such decisions can put unnecessary pressure on players.
The 44-year-old also raised concerns about the impact of social media criticism on Pakistan’s players. He warned that constant scrutiny after every poor performance could create a fear of failure.
“Players should not be going through such mental stress and social media after every bad game, or the fear of failure will settle in the minds of our players,” Malik said.
Pakistan will now look to avoid a 3-0 series defeat in the final Test. However, the changes made by the PCB have added further pressure around a team already struggling for results.
