Sunil Gavaskar Picks 15-Man Squad For T20 World Cup, Leaves Out Shreyas Iyer
Sunil Gavaskar didn't pick any backup openers in the squad.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is all set to announce India’s squad for the 2021 T20 World Cup, starting from October 17, 2021.
While fans are busy making assumptions for the possible squad, former Indian captain and legend Sunil Gavaskar picked his 15-men team for the mega event (on SportsTak) and has done some surprising exclusions in it.
One of the players that the batting legend picked is completely out of the equation and no one would even think of him. Not just this, Gavaskar even excluded some big names from the side.
Sunil Gavaskar’s Batsmen Pick:
India’s final eleven for the T20 World Cup is pretty clear to us. Virat Kohli will be leading the side while Rohit Sharma will be his deputy. KL Rahul has been picked as one of the openers. Notably, the former India captain has excluded Shikhar Dhawan from the squad, who could be one of the backup openers for team India.
Going in with middle order, the 72-year old has picked Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, and Hardik Pandya. However, it is yet to be seen if Hardik Pandya will perform the role of a proper batsman or an all-rounder in the team.
One surprising exclusion that will hurt many of us is of Shreyas Iyer. The Mumbai-born is one of the big names in the limited-overs cricket and his exclusion from Gavaskar’s squad will undoubtedly raise eyebrows in the cricket fraternity.
Sunil Gavaskar’s All-Rounders Pick:
Among all-rounders, the former India captain picked Krunal Pandya, Washington Sundar, and Ravindra Jadeja. Among these three, Krunal Pandya’s name came out as a surprise as the majority of the cricket fans weren’t expecting him in the squad.
Washington Sundar, on the other hand, is a doubtful pick for the T20 World Cup as he is currently recovering from a finger injury. Earlier he was ruled out of the Indian Premier League (IPL), so it needs to be seen whether he recovers in time for the T20 World Cup.
Sunil Gavaskar’s Bowlers Pick:
The batting legend didn’t disappoint while picking bowlers as he picked Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, and Yuzvendra Chahal.
Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur have been quite impressive with the bat lately and that will give India an immense depth, something that team India will look for while entering the T20 World Cup.
Here are Sunil Gavaskar’s 15-Men Squad:
Virat Kohli (C), Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul (WK), Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (WK), Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravindra Jadeja.
