Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Tuesday (November 15) released their former captain Mayank Agarwal ahead of the auction for IPL 2023. Under his leadership, Punjab Kings finished sixth in the 10-team league in IPL 2022.
The Karnataka batter had a dreadful campaign on a personal level as he could manage only 196 runs in 13 matches at an average of 16.33 and a strike rate of 122.50 with his highest score being 52 runs.
Earlier, the Preity Zinta and Ness Wadia co-owned franchise sacked Agarwal from captaincy and named senior Indian batter Shikhar Dhawan as their new captain for the 2023 season of the cash-rich league.
Meanwhile, former India cricketer Dodda Ganesh lashed out at Punjab Kings for the way they handled Mayank Agarwal after a bad season and cited the examples of five-time champions Mumbai Indians and four-time champions Chennai Super Kings as how they back their players in tough times.
Dodda Ganesh took to Twitter to express his disappointment with Punjab Kings. Here’s what he wrote:
“Mayank had four really good seasons for Punjab. One bad season and he has been released. That’s not how you build teams. This is where MI and CSK are a class apart. The kind of rapport the two most successful franchisees build with their players is commendable #IPLRetentions”
