IPL 2021, Match 3 – SRH vs KKR: The third match of VIVO IPL 2021 will be played on the 11th of April at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium (Chepauk), Chennai between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders.
SunRisers Hyderabad has only won the IPL once, in 2016, but finished strongly in the last edition of the tournament, finishing third in the table and the playoff stage.
The form of David Warner has been key to any success SRH have had, and with his star perhaps on the wane, they could struggle in 2021. Some questionable work at the auction table won’t help. Their big signings were Kedar Jadhav, whose slow anti-cameos was one of the features of Chennai Super Kings’ poor campaign last year, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman, a fine bowler, but likely to be surplus to requirements with two other Afghan spinners – Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan – already in the mix.
However, the form in India of Jonny Bairstow, Player of the Series in England’s 2-1 ODI defeat, will be a boon, and with SRH having found the best roles for Jason Holder and Wriddhiman Saha towards the end of last year, there is reason to believe they could start strong in 2021.
Kolkata Knight Riders will enter yet another Indian Premier League season as strong contenders for a playoffs spot. They finished in fifth position in the last two seasons, with the 2020 edition in the UAE being heartbreaking for them as they failed to qualify due to a slightly inferior net run-rate, as was the case in 2019 too. As a captain, Eoin Morgan knows far too well about fine margins.
The last season was challenging for KKR as they dealt with injuries and lack of form for key players. Shubman Gill and Pat Cummins, the most expensive buy-in IPL 2020, fell short of expectations for the most part, while West Indies stars Sunil Narine and Andre Russell were far from their best too.
In terms of captaincy too, KKR made a big call at the halfway mark of the season and switched from Dinesh Karthik to Eoin Morgan due to the lack of runs by the former.
The biggest positive for KKR last season was the emergence of Varun Chakravarthy. He was the only bowler to bag a five-for in the season and was the go-to man for his team right through. But the off-season has been plagued by injuries and fitness concerns for the Tamil Nadu spinner.
All said and done, heading into IPL 2021, the Knight Riders will take confidence from the fact that they didn’t really have a disastrous season the last time around. They may have finished outside the top four but unlike the other teams that missed out, they didn’t suffer a big losing streak and were in it for the most part.

The pitch at the MA Chidambaram Stadium (also known as Chepauk) has had a history of assisting the spinners. Meanwhile, the batsmen find it tough to get going due to the sluggish nature of the surface.
Fast bowlers too get a little help occasionally, however, the bounce remains low more often than not. Notably, the stadium usually witnesses low-scoring encounters. In the opening game on this pitch, it was the pacers who had more joy compared to spinner but the speedsters were rewarded for their variations rather than their stock deliveries.
The temperature in Chennai on April 11, 2021 (Sunday) is expected to be around the late 20 degree and early 30 degree Celsius mark. The skies will be cloudy during the time of the match and there are no chances of rain so we can expect a complete match without any interruptions.
