India vs Australia 2020: Sunil Gavaskar Demands Transparency on Rohit Sharma’s Injury as MI Skipper Not Selected For Australia Tour
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the team for the tour of Australia on Monday (26 October). Rohit Sharma's name was not included in the team as he is suffering from a hamstring injury.
India has to tour Australia soon after the completion of the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the team for the tour on Monday (26 October) and surprisingly, Rohit Sharma’s name was not included in the team as he is suffering from a hamstring injury. He has also missed his last two games for Mumbai Indians. Kieron Pollard was seen leading the team in his absence.
The BCCI named KL Rahul as vice-captain of the limited-overs sides in the absence of Rohit Sharma. The statement was issued by the Board of Control for Cricket in India after the selection of the team of the three formats going on tour to Australia. It said BCCI medical team is constantly monitoring the injury of Rohit Sharma and Ishant Sharma.
Shortly after the announcement of the team for Australia tour, IPL franchise team Mumbai Indians posted a video of Rohit’s net practice in which he seems completely fit. The franchise also posted a short clip in which Rohit was hitting sixes at will.
Don’t Know What Kind of Injury it is: Sunil Gavaskar
Meanwhile, Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has expressed his displeasure at keeping him out of the team. He says that the fans have every right to know why this player was not selected on the tour.
“I didn’t see what was shown something about him practising in the nets for Mumbai Indians. So I don’t know what his injury is. If his injury was serious, he won’t even be padded up. So we’re talking about a tour which is starting in December, the Test matches start around December 17 which is a month and a half away,” Sunil Gavaskar told Star Sports on Monday.
“If he is practising in the nets for Mumbai Indians, honestly I don’t know what kind of injury it is. I think a little bit of transparency and a little bit of openness about what actually is the problem with him will help everybody. The Indian cricket fan deserves to know more than anything else.
“I understand the franchises don’t want to give the hand away, they are here to win the game. They don’t want to give oppositions any psychological advantage.
“But we are talking about the Indian team. Even Mayank Agarwal has not played. Indian cricket fans, they ought to know, what is happening with two of their key players.”
Shikhar Dhawan and Mayank Agarwal are included in the T20I and ODI squads in his absence.
Team India will leave for Australia from UAE soon after the completion of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020. The first two ODIs will be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground on 27 and 29 November. After this, the last ODI will be held at Manuka Oval in Canberra. The first T20 will also be played in Canberra followed by the last two T20s in Sydney. The pink ball test will be played in the floodlight in Adelaide from December 17 to 21.
