Australia head coach Justin Langer on Wednesday lauded a young batsman Will Pucovski but he didn’t make it clear if Pucovski will get a chance to make his Test debut in the Border-Gavaskar trophy, starting from December 17.
Will Pucovski played brilliantly in Sheffield Shield as he smashed two double hundreds in his first two games this season for Victoria, scoring 255 not out, 202 and 38 in his last three innings against South Australia and Western Australia, respectively.
Pucovski, for his sensational performance in the Sheffield Shield got awarded by Cricket Australia as he a maiden call-up in the Australia Test Squad for the four-Test match series against India.
But despite witnessing his performance in Sheffield Shield, it seems that Australia will go with the old duo of David Warner and Joe Burns in the first Test against India, starting from December 17 in Adelaide.
“We think very, very highly of Will. When the opportunity comes, he’s ready to play test cricket. The opportunity hopefully will come for him at some point, whether it’s this series or a series to come,” Langer told reporters on a conference call on Wednesday.
“For Will it’s about where the opportunities come. For the last 30 years it’s been drummed into me if you can bat top three in Shield cricket, you can bat anywhere. Someone like Will, who’s opening the batting for Victoria and has batted three, it gives him the flexibility to bat anywhere,” Langer added.
Steve Smith Return Giving Australia ‘Good Headaches’: Justin Langer
Speaking on team selection, Langer said that they are struggling on choosing the best team as they now have plenty of players with Smith’s return.
Steve Smith and David Warner were banned from all international and domestic cricket for a period of 12 months for breaching their Code of Conduct after the ball-tampering controversy in South Africa.
“In England we had Mitch Marsh, Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell able to get us at least 10 overs. So we like that combination, the extra all-rounder.
“Obviously Steve will come straight back in and there’s some headaches but they’re good headaches,” Langer said.
