IPL 2024: [Watch] Angry Shubman Gill Engages In Ugly Fight with On-Field Umpire Over Wide Call During RR vs GT Clash
Shubman Gill wasn't pleased with the on-field umpire's wide call.
Gujarat Titans (GT) skipper Shubman Gill was unhappy with the match officials’ decision-making regarding a wide call in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 clash against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Wednesday, April 10.
The delivery from Mohit Sharma, which seemed to finish the 17th over with a ball well outside the off stump, was deemed a wide by on-field umpire Vinod Seshan. GT skipper opted for a review, and replays suggested it was a borderline decision.
The third umpire, KN Anantha Padmanabhan, stated that since Samson was standing outside the off stump, the wide line would slightly adjust away from the batter, favouring the bowler. Upon freezing the ball’s trajectory at the crease, it appeared to marginally deviate from the wide line, aligning with Samson’s position.
Following the thorough discussion involving the third umpire, the director, and the on-field umpire, there was growing confidence that the wide call would be reversed. Unexpectedly, the third umpire requested a further examination of the footage and directed the on-field umpire to maintain his original wide decision.
After the on-field umpire signalled wide, wicketkeeper Matthew Wade appeared confused with the decision. Soon after, an angry Shubman Gill stepped forward and tried to convey his perspective and asked about the perplexing situation. However, the on-field umpire insisted on upholding his initial decision.
As for the game, Rajasthan Royals rode on half-century knocks from skipper Sanju Samson and Riyan Parag to post 196 runs on the board after some early blows. While Samson remained unbeaten for 68 runs from 38 balls, Riyan scored 76 runs from 48 balls.
