IND vs NZ 2026: India Face New Zealand Test in Christchurch With Short Preparation Time
India face New Zealand in the first T20I in Christchurch on October 22, with Shreyas Iyer leading a team missing Bumrah and Pandya.
India will begin their five-match T20I series against New Zealand on October 22 at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, with limited preparation time and challenging conditions expected to test the visitors.
Led by Shreyas Iyer, India will look to adjust quickly after a busy home series that ended in rain-affected Bengaluru on October 17. The absence of Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya has also left the team management with important selection decisions.
India have had just four days to recover from their home series and prepare for New Zealand’s conditions. Their packed schedule included the Asian Games assignment in Japan, which ended on October 3, followed by five T20Is at home.
Bumrah has been rested with the upcoming Test series in mind, while Pandya has not played international cricket since the T20 World Cup final against New Zealand in Ahmedabad in March.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar returns to the side after two impressive IPL seasons with Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Varun Chakaravarthy is also back after an injury break, although his place in the playing XI remains uncertain.
India could choose Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shivam Dube as their seam-bowling all-rounders, which may leave Naman Dhir out. Young opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could also miss out as India weigh their options at the top of the order.
India’s Probable Playing XI: Sanju Samson (wk), Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer (c), Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Prince Yadav or Varun Chakaravarthy, Arshdeep Singh.
New Zealand will also make changes to their combination, with Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra unavailable. Devon Conway is expected to take a place in the top three, while the hosts have six seamers to choose from.
New Zealand’s Probable Playing XI: Finn Allen, Tim Seifert (wk), Devon Conway, Glenn Phillips, Daryl Mitchell, Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Santner (c), Nathan Smith, Kyle Jamieson, Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson.
The pitch at Hagley Oval could offer extra help to fast bowlers as the season begins. Dew may also play a part in the evening, making the toss important, with the captain winning it likely to consider bowling first.
India captain Shreyas Iyer said the team would focus on adjusting quickly to the conditions. “We’ll try to acclimatise as soon as possible,” he said, stressing the importance of a good practice session before the opening match.
India have won 16 of their 20 completed T20Is against New Zealand since January 2020, including two Super Over victories. One other match ended in a tie, giving the visitors a strong recent record against the hosts.
Ishan Kishan is also close to an individual milestone. He needs seven more runs to go past Suryakumar Yadav’s Indian record of 1,164 T20I runs in a calendar year, set in 2022.
The opening match begins at 12:30 PM IST on October 22. With limited preparation, key players missing and conditions expected to favour pace, India will need to settle into the series quickly.
