When Ravindra Jadeja Got Banned From IPL for Secretly Negotiating with Mumbai Indians
Ravindra Jadeja was once banned from IPL for violating rules and trying to negotiate a deal with Mumbai Indians. Now, his rumored CSK-to-RR trade could be IPL 2026’s biggest move.
Ravindra Jadeja has been at the centre of IPL discussions lately, with reports suggesting his much-talked-about trade from Chennai Super Kings to Rajasthan Royals ahead of IPL 2026.
The potential swap, with Sanju Samson moving the other way, could be one of the most dramatic deals in league history. But not many remember that Jadeja was once banned from the IPL altogether.
Back in 2010, Jadeja, then a rising all-rounder, faced a one-season suspension for violating player contract rules. Having represented Rajasthan Royals in the 2008 and 2009 seasons, Jadeja reportedly tried to negotiate a deal directly with the Mumbai Indians without informing his team.
The IPL governing council, led by commissioner Lalit Modi at the time, found him guilty of breaching guidelines and imposed a ban.
“The IPL governing council has arrived at this decision after taking into account Ravindra Jadeja’s representation,” Modi had said then.
“We will not tolerate any player playing games or blackmailing franchises or the IPL/BCCI in any manner.”
At that time, Jadeja had already become one of the Royals’ most valuable young players, contributing heavily to their 2008 title win.
His fallout with the franchise marked one of the IPL’s earliest controversies involving a player’s contract.
Since then, Jadeja has rebuilt his reputation, becoming one of the league’s most consistent all-rounders.
After joining Chennai Super Kings in 2012, he went on to win multiple titles with them and became one of the cornerstones of MS Dhoni’s squad. He even captained CSK briefly in 2022 before Dhoni reclaimed the role.
