What to Expect from IPL 2023
IPL 2023 Auction is scheduled for December this year.
The IPL 2022 is over and done, and fans have cheered, screamed, and celebrated. From the Chennai Super Kings, the Gujarat Titans were hailed the champions this time, after they beat Rajasthan Royals by seven wickets.
While you wait for more details and updates about the IPL 2023 with 10CRIC, here are the rosters after the franchises released and retained players.
Mumbai Indians (MI)
Mumbai has released a lot of players after coming last in the IPL 2022 season. They have kept their batting core but must rebuild their bowling assault around Jasprit Bumrah, particularly their spin supplies. And they will be hoping that Jofra Archer is healthy and ready for IPL 2023.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK)
Super Kings placed eighth in the IPL 2022, although they haven’t made any drastic moves in terms of player release. Bravo is the biggest star they let go, but they let him go last year as well, only to repurchase him at auction. Will they repeat that next month? And, after months of debate, the Super Kings have kept Ravindra Jadeja following a turbulent 2022 season in which he was nominated captain but then removed by MS Dhoni midway through the competition.
Gujarat Titans (GT)
Defending champions Titans had only released six players (two of them were moved to Knight Riders) before the auction, but they still have a rich INR 19.25 crore to spend. So, expect them to work hard to bring in a handful of players to cover the vacancies in their roster.
Delhi Capitals (DC)
The Capitals finished sixth in the IPL 2022, almost missing the playoffs, although they haven’t made any changes to their roster. Their most significant move was the trade of Shardul Thakur to Knight Riders. The other players removed were not regulars in their starting XI last season.
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)
Super Giants made the playoffs in their inaugural season but were eliminated by Royal Challengers. Holder, who they purchased for INR 8.75 crore, is perhaps the greatest surprise on their list of dismissed players. Perhaps the Super Giants are freeing up funds to pursue a certain player – Ben Stokes, Sam Curran – at this auction.
Rajasthan Royals (RR)
The Royals, who finished second last season, have released nine players, including five abroad players who saw little to no action last season: James Neesham, Daryl Mitchell, Rassie van der Dussen, Nathan Coulter-Nile, and Corbin Bosch are among the cast members.
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)
After opening the season with two defeats followed by five straight victories, the Sunrisers crashed and burned to finish eighth in the league, resulting in a massive clean-out at the organization. Captain Williamson, who had been kept for INR 14 crore, has been released, as has Pooran, who had become the most expensive West Indian ever purchased at an auction for INR 10.75 crore. The issue is, who are the Sunrisers considering as their future captain, or are they attempting to repurchase Williamson at a reduced cost? They have the highest money to spend in the auction, INR 42.25 crore.
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)
The Royal Challengers finished fourth in the league and subsequently lost Qualifier 2 in the playoffs against the Royals. After a good season, they released the fewest players – five – from any team, none of whom were regulars in their starting XI. As a result, they have the auction’s second-lowest purse and only two abroad spots to fill.
Punjab Kings (PBKS)
Following yet another season in which they failed to enter the final four, the Kings have made changes, dismissing nine players, including their captain for 2022, Mayank. Aside from Odean, none of their other releases were regulars in their first XI last season, and Punjab enters the auction with the second-largest purse.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)
Knight Riders have discharged as many as 16 players, and after trading in Shardul, Lockie Ferguson, and Rahmanullah Gurbaz, they now have only 14 players on their roster and the smallest budget – INR 7.05 crore – to spend in the auction. They finished eighth last season and will need to make some strategic purchases to strengthen their bench for next season.
