Will Jasprit Bumrah Play the Sri Lanka Test Series? Latest Injury Update

India have received an encouraging update on Jasprit Bumrah ahead of the two-Test series against Sri Lanka, with the fast bowler progressing well in his recovery from a knee issue.

When India’s squad was announced, Bumrah’s name carried an asterisk, making his selection subject to fitness clearance. The 31-year-old is currently undergoing assessment at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, and early signs suggest he could be available for the series.

Bumrah Yet to Resume Bowling

Bumrah’s knee problem first surfaced during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The injury was managed carefully through the IPL season, and he was later advised to take an injection followed by 8 to 10 days of complete rest.

According to a Times of India report, Bumrah has completed that recovery period and is now being monitored at the Centre of Excellence. However, he has not yet started bowling.

“Selectors were thoroughly briefed. Bumrah was advised an injection by the BCCI medical team and had to rest for the next 8-10 days. The moment that period was over, he reached the CoE for assessment. He is yet to start bowling, and the management will be given a better idea in the coming days,” a BCCI source told TOI.

The report added that Bumrah is expected to begin bowling on Saturday. His availability will become clearer once he starts bowling at full intensity.

“He will start bowling from Saturday, and the picture will become much clearer when he bowls full throttle. See, it’s not a batter we are dealing with. So the assessment and other protocols are different. And with Bumrah, what’s the need to take any chance? There are 15 days for the Test. So, fingers crossed,” the source added.

If cleared, Bumrah is expected to join the Indian squad directly in Galle. He is unlikely to travel with the team when it departs on August 4.

India will begin the tour with a four-day practice match in Colombo from August 7 before the first Test starts in Galle on August 15.

Bumrah’s return would be a major boost for India, who are currently fifth in the World Test Championship 2025-27 standings after three series. The team has won four Tests, lost four, and drawn one so far.

With challenging tours of New Zealand and a home Border-Gavaskar Trophy still to come, India will be eager to collect maximum points in Sri Lanka. Bumrah’s record against Sri Lanka is impressive, with 10 wickets in just two Tests at an average of 9, including best figures of 5/24.
