‘They Are Jealous of Him’ – Brian Lara Slams Critics Who Accused Virat Kohli of Being Selfish in 2023 World Cup

Virat Kohli was the highest run-scorer for Indian in the World Cup 2023.

West Indies cricket legend Brian Lara defended Virat Kohli against critics who accused him of selfish play in the 2023 World Cup, stating that all this unwarranted criticism is fueled by jealousy towards Kohli’s outstanding cricket achievements.

Kohli’s performance in the 2023 World Cup was nothing short of historic, as he amassed a record-breaking 765 runs in 11 innings at an average of 95.62 and a strike rate of 90.32.

He also became the first player to surpass 700 runs in a single World Cup edition, eclipsing Sachin Tendulkar’s previous record of 673 runs in 2003.

While Kohli earned accolades from most cricket pundits for his achievements, critics like Pakistan’s Mohammad Hafeez accused him of selfish play, alleging that he deliberately decelerated to score centuries.

Contrary to such opinions, here’s what Brian Lara told to Anandabazar Patrika:

“Those [who] are saying all these are jealous of him. They are envious of the amount of runs he has scored. I have faced this too in my career.”

During the World Cup 2023, Virat Kohli also broke the record of legendary Sachin Tendulkar of scoring most ODI centuries in international cricket. The Indian batting giant now has 50 centuries in One-Day Internationals to his name.
