South Africa beat New Zealand by seven wickets in a key Group D match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 in Ahmedabad. With this win at the Narendra Modi Stadium, they became the first team to enter the Super 8s.
New Zealand batted first and posted 175 for 7. It looked like a solid total at one stage, but they lost three wickets for just seven runs in the final overs and fell short of a bigger score.
Mark Chapman led the charge with 48 off 26 balls. Daryl Mitchell supported him well during a 57-run stand. James Neesham added a quick 23 off 15 to push the total forward.
Marco Jansen was the star with the ball for South Africa. He picked up 4 for 40, his best figures in T20Is. He removed Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, Rachin Ravindra and Chapman with smart changes of pace.
Lungi Ngidi and Keshav Maharaj also chipped in with key wickets. Debutant Corbin Bosch impressed with a tidy spell and added pressure in the middle overs.
Chasing 176, South Africa came out firing. They smashed 83 runs in the powerplay, which is their joint-highest in T20 World Cups. The intent was clear from ball one.
Aiden Markram played a captain’s knock. He brought up a fifty in just 19 balls, the fastest for South Africa in T20 World Cups. He stayed unbeaten on 86 off 44 and finished the game in style.
Quinton de Kock scored 20 off 14 at the top. Dewald Brevis added 21 off 17, while Ryan Rickelton also chipped in during the chase.
South Africa reached 178 for 3 in just 17.1 overs. The win also stretched their T20 World Cup record against New Zealand to 5-0.
This was a crucial match for New Zealand, who needed a strong result to keep their Super 8 hopes alive. Instead, South Africa stayed unbeaten and now sit comfortably at the top of Group D.
They have one league match left against UAE before the Super 8 stage begins. For now, the Proteas look confident, balanced and ready for tougher tests ahead.
