Star Spinner Forced to Rule Out of T20 World Cup 2024

Sandeep Lamichhane’s US visa has been denied for the second time and hence he will not be able to take part in the T20 World Cup 2024.

Nepal cricket team suffered a huge blow as star leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane will miss the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. Lamichhane’s visa application for the United States, where part of the tournament will be held, was denied for the second time.

Lamichhane had initially applied for a visa last week, which was rejected. Following the denial, both the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) and the Nepal government intervened to support his case. However, their efforts were of no use as the US Embassy denied his application again on Thursday, May 30th.

“Despite a concerted effort from the Nepal government and cricket authorities, the US Embassy was unable to grant travel permission to Sandeep Lamichhane,” a statement from CAN said.

The US Embassy has maintained that they work to ensure visas are issued on time for athletes competing in major events. However, they declined to comment on Sandeep Lamichhane’s specific case due to confidentiality regulations.

Lamichhane had faced legal troubles earlier, accused in a rape case. Though initially convicted and sentenced, the Patan High Court overturned the decision, acquitting him of all charges. Following his acquittal, CAN lifted his suspension, and allowed him to take part in the T20 World Cup. However, the US visa denial has dashed those hopes.
