Star Batter Misses Out As Cricket South Africa Name T20 World Cup Squad
Rassie van der Dussen has not been included in South Africa's T20 World Cup squad.
Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Tuesday announced the 15-member squad for the forthcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, which is set to be held in Australia next month.
Skipper Temba Bavuma has recuperated completely from the elbow injury and will lead Proteas in a showpiece event Down Under.
Meanwhile, Rassie van der Dussen, who suffered a finger injury during the second Test against England in Manchester, has been ruled out of the tournament.
The 22-year-old Tristan Stubbs received his maiden World Cup call-up following his batting heroics against England in the recent T20I series.
Rilee Rossow, who made his return to the South Africa T20I setup after a long gap of six years in July, has also been included in the squad.
CSA Convenor of Selectors Victor Mpitsang, speaking on the selection, conceded that the selection process for the gala event was pretty tough as they had a plethora of talented players to choose from.
“This has been a really tough squad to select, simply because we had so many players in excellent form over the past few months and performing at a level that made the selectors sit up and notice them.”
“Someone like Tristan Stubbs who was not in the frame a year ago has done incredibly well to force his way into the mix based on his performances and his selection should be an inspiration for every young player out there.”
“We are also delighted to welcome back our captain Temba Bavuma from injury and we have no doubt his return will further galvanize the team,” Victor Mpitsang said.
The Proteas are placed in the Super 12- Group 2 alongside India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh while the two remaining positions will be occupied by the Group B winner and the Group A runner-up.
Group A consists of Sri Lanka, Namibia, Netherlands, and UAE while Group B has West Indies, Scotland, Ireland, and Zimbabwe.
