Shreyas Iyer Undergoes Fitness Tests, NZ ODI Return Still a 50-50 Call

Shreyas Iyer is undergoing fitness tests in Bengaluru after injury, with his New Zealand ODI return still a 50-50 call.

Shreyas Iyer has reported to the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru as he takes the next step in his comeback from a serious abdominal and spleen injury suffered in October.

The injury ruled him out midway through the ODI series against Australia and has kept him away from competitive cricket since. The Indian team management is now closely monitoring his recovery before taking any call.

Iyer has already started light batting sessions in Mumbai and has shown no signs of discomfort. Recent scans and medical tests have also come back clear, which has left the medical staff satisfied with his progress.

Over the next four to six days, Iyer will go through a full fitness assessment in Bengaluru. This includes endurance drills, imaging tests, monitored net sessions, and match-like simulation work to check how his body responds.

A source tracking the process said, “Shreyas is looking really good. His recovery has been better than what was initially expected. He will have to undergo a few mandatory checks in the next few days.”

Despite the positive signs, his selection for the New Zealand ODI series remains uncertain. At this stage, it is being described as a 50-50 call, with the final decision expected only after all checks are completed.

Another source explained the cautious approach, saying there is no fixed return date yet. The focus is on making sure Iyer can bat and train without any pain before giving him the green signal.

The team management does not want to rush him back, especially given the nature of the injury. Clearance will only come if he completes every activity without discomfort.

In Iyer’s absence, Ruturaj Gaikwad has taken over the No. 4 role for India in ODIs. He has also continued to bat in the middle order for Maharashtra, adding weight to his case to retain the spot.
