Sanju Samson Hits 42-Ball Century Just Ahead of Asia Cup 2025
Sanju Samson smashes a 42-ball century in KCL, boosting his case for India’s opening slot at the Asia Cup 2025.
Sanju Samson reminded everyone of his class with a blazing hundred in the Kerala Cricket League on Sunday. Playing for his side against Aries Kollam Sailors, the wicketkeeper-batter hammered a 42-ball century to put himself back in the race for India’s opening slot in the Asia Cup 2025.
Samson had failed in the previous KCL outing, but this time he was in full flow. Chasing a daunting 237, he attacked from the start and reached fifty with a flurry of boundaries.
His innings included 13 fours and five sixes, and he struck at an incredible rate of 238. The bowlers had no answers as he kept his side alive in the chase.
Strong Case For The Opener’s Role
For the past year, Samson has partnered Abhishek Sharma at the top in T20Is and has three international centuries to show for it.
The pair had built a strong understanding, but Shubman Gill’s return to the side as vice-captain has complicated matters.
Gill is expected to open alongside Abhishek, which could push Samson down the order. However, his whirlwind knock in KCL is a reminder of the impact he can create as an opener.
With a strike rate over 200 and the ability to take on bowlers in the powerplay, he may have forced the selectors and coach Gautam Gambhir to rethink the combination.
Hinting At A Different Role?
Interestingly, Samson’s batting positions in the KCL also raised eyebrows. He came in at No. 5 in the opening game and then dropped himself to No. 6 in the next match. That role could suit India’s requirement for a wicketkeeper-finisher in the lower order.
