Rohit and Kohli’s ODI Futures Under Review as BCCI Plans Ahead for 2027 World Cup

Rohit and Kohli’s ODI future uncertain as BCCI plans for 2027 World Cup; key talks expected over next phase

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are currently only active in the ODI format, but their futures in Indian cricket remain unclear. Both legends retired from T20 Internationals after India lifted the 2024 T20 World Cup and later stepped away from Test cricket in May 2025, just before the England tour.

Their last appearance in Indian colours came during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, where India defeated New Zealand in the final in Dubai to win the title. Since then, neither has played an ODI.

With the next 50-over World Cup scheduled for 2027, when both will be close to 40, questions are being raised about how long they will continue. The BCCI is expected to hold talks with them soon.

“Yes, it will be discussed soon. We still have more than two years for the next World Cup (November 2027). Both Kohli and Rohit will be pushing 40 by then, so there has to be a clear plan ahead for the big event as our last win was in 2011,” a BCCI source told The Week.

The source also noted the importance of giving younger players chances while balancing respect for the senior duo.

“Look, both Kohli and Rohit have made huge contributions to white ball cricket for the team and the sport in general. They have achieved almost everything. So, I don’t think anybody’s going to force their hand, but there will be some honest and professional conversations before the next ODI cycle starts to see where they stand mentally and physically.”

The BCCI was reportedly surprised when both opted to continue in ODIs but retired from the other formats. Rohit had earlier confirmed his interest in playing more 50-over cricket during a post-match press conference after the Champions Trophy final.

However, with both players staying away from competitive cricket since that win, there are concerns over their long break. The board may ask them to return to domestic cricket through the Vijay Hazare Trophy later this year to stay match-ready.

Depending on their future plans and form, the BCCI is also considering formal ODI farewells if they decide to step away before 2027.
