“Not Getting An Opportunity Is Disappointing” – Dejected Cheteshwar Pujara Hoping for India Comeback
Pujara hopeful of Test comeback, says England tour ideal chance; feels disappointment after WTC 2023 snub.

Cheteshwar Pujara has opened up about his absence from the Indian Test team, expressing clear disappointment but also hope. The veteran batter, who has played 103 Tests and scored 7,195 runs, hasn’t featured for India since the World Test Championship final in June 2023.
Since making his debut in 2010, Pujara has been one of India’s most reliable batters in the longest format. Only Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin have played more Tests for India in that time. While Ashwin has retired and Kohli remains active, Pujara continues to wait for a recall.
Pujara said he still has a lot to offer and hopes to be included in the upcoming India tour of England.
“Team India has been quite competitive, but has not won a series in England for around 20 years now, so given an opportunity, I would like to give the best from my end and grab the opportunity if the team needs me. This would be the perfect opportunity to contribute when a win is much needed in England”, Pujara said on Backstage with Boria.
He believes the England series is a great chance to make an impact and contribute meaningfully. Pujara emphasized that despite the setback of being dropped, he has kept working hard on his game.
“When one has been successful at the highest level and played more than 100 Test matches and are still not a part of the team, you carry on the hard work that has been the reason behind getting the success. Not getting the opportunity is a big disappointment, but I keep myself ready and motivated because of my love for this game. And out of that love, I keep myself close to the game and routine without expecting much, and through any opportunity I get, be it domestic or county,” Pujara added.
He continues to stay match-fit and active by playing domestic cricket and county matches.
“Yes, of course, if the team needs and I get the opportunity, I am prepared from my end. I have been working on my physical fitness, performing well both domestically and internationally” he added.
India suffered a 3-1 Test series defeat in Australia earlier this year, where Pujara was absent. Reflecting on that result, he believes his experience could have helped.
“Of course. As a player, I have been successful playing in Australia before and have a good record. This makes a player confident and well-prepared for what to expect from the opposition. There is always a better chance to succeed when the scenario is such,” he added.
Pujara also pointed to his 19 Test centuries the most by any Indian since 2010 apart from Kohli as proof that he still deserves a place in the side.
