Matthew Hayden, Vernon Philander appointed as Pakistan men's team coaches for T20 World Cup' announces PCB chairman Ramiz Raja
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), on Monday confirmed the appointment of the legendary Australian opener Matthew Hayden and former South African pacer Vernon Philander as coaches of the Pakistan cricket team for the ICC World T20.
The announcement was made in Ramiz Raja’s presence after he took over as PCB’s chairman.
Soon after Pakistan announced its T20 World Cup squad, their head coach Misbah-ul-Haq and bowling coach Waqar Younis stepped down from their roles, creating void in the coaching staff. However, later Abdul Razzaq and Saqlain Mushtaq were appointed for the duties but that was only made for the upcoming series against New Zealand.
Matthew Hayden doesn’t need any introduction. He was regarded as one of the most destructive openers of Australia. He represented Australia in 103 Tests, 161 ODIs and 9 T20Is between 1994 and 2009 while accumulating 8625, 6133 and 308 runs respectively, which also includes 40 international tons.
South African pacer pacer Philander, on the other hand has represented his country in 64 Tests, 30 ODIs and 7 T20Is with 224, 41 and 4 wickets under his belt respectively. He announced his retirement back in 2020.
Babar Azam-led Pakistan will commence their T20 World Cup campaign against India on October 24.
