Ireland Name 14-Member ODI Squad for Afghanistan Series, Paul Stirling Returns as Captain

Cricket Ireland has announced a 14-member squad for the first three matches of the upcoming five-match ODI series against Afghanistan. The selection includes the return of captain Paul Stirling and three uncapped players as Ireland begin an important campaign in the race for qualification to the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

Stirling is back to lead the side after recovering from the injury that forced him to miss action during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. His return gives Ireland a major boost ahead of a series that could play a big role in their World Cup hopes.

The squad also features three potential ODI debutants. Jai Moondra, Ben Calitz and Byron McDonough have all earned their maiden ODI call-ups. Moondra and Calitz impressed enough during the recent T20I series against India to secure their places, while McDonough has also been rewarded with his first chance in the 50-over format.

Ireland have been forced to deal with several injury setbacks. Fast bowlers Josh Little, Craig Young and Barry McCarthy are all unavailable, leaving the selectors with limited pace-bowling options. Because of the injury situation, Cricket Ireland has named a squad only for the opening three matches, with the remaining selections expected to depend on player availability and fitness.

There are also changes behind the scenes. Former Ireland wicketkeeper Gary Wilson will begin his first assignment as the team’s head coach during the series. Former England head coach Jonathan Trott will also join the squad as a batting consultant for the first two matches, bringing valuable experience to the coaching group.

The five-match ODI series will be played from August 5 to August 11, with matches scheduled at Bready and Stormont. Every game will be important as both teams look to collect valuable points in the qualification race for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
