The controversy gained traction after the recent Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor. Critics argued that playing Pakistan so soon after these incidents disrespects soldiers’ sacrifices and hurts the sentiments of terror victims’ families.

A group of petitioners moved the Supreme Court, seeking cancellation of the match. They claimed that national security and dignity must come before sports entertainment and warned that such fixtures could affect the morale of the armed forces and the country.

On September 11, the Supreme Court dismissed the plea. The bench observed that the fixture is just a match and cannot be stopped at this stage, especially as it is already scheduled for Sunday.

Meanwhile, the IPL franchise Punjab Kings found themselves in the middle of the storm. While announcing the game on social media, they avoided mentioning Pakistan’s name. The move triggered sharp reactions, eventually forcing the team to disable comments on their X account.

Despite the controversy, the cricketing buzz around India-Pakistan remains strong. The fixture is expected to draw global attention, with fans on both sides eager for another high-intensity contest.
