IPL 2025: Why Is ‘Boycott Delhi Capitals’ Trending on Social Media?
Delhi Capitals' decision to bring in Mustafizur Rahman as a replacement for Jake Fraser-McGurk has sparked calls for a boycott on Twitter, amid geopolitical tensions.

The second leg of IPL 2025 is set to begin on May 17, and just before the restart, Delhi Capitals announced Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman as the replacement for Jake Fraser-McGurk.
The Australian batter was ruled out for the rest of the season due to unavailability. The replacement comes under the new rule, where franchises can sign temporary players due to national duty or injury concerns.
Delhi Capitals Face Online Backlash
The announcement, however, triggered criticism on social media. Many fans took to Twitter (X) with the hashtag #BoycottDelhiCapitals, expressing displeasure over Mustafizur’s selection. A section of users linked the decision to current geopolitical issues between India and its neighbours.
Some posts claimed that Bangladesh hasn’t supported India diplomatically and pointed out religious tensions, especially against Hindus in Bangladesh. These social media reactions led to a strong online trend, though there has been no official response from the franchise or BCCI on the matter.
Mustafizur to Join After UAE Series
Despite the backlash, Mustafizur is expected to join the DC squad after finishing a short two-match T20I series in the UAE.
He has been one of Bangladesh’s most consistent bowlers and has a good IPL record too. Last season, playing for Chennai Super Kings, he picked up 14 wickets in nine matches.
Mustafizur has already represented Delhi Capitals in 2022 and 2023, and his return will give much-needed experience to DC’s bowling unit. With Mitchell Starc’s return still uncertain, DC might rely on Mustafizur to lead the pace attack in the remaining games.
Delhi Capitals are still in the playoff race and will hope the experienced left-arm pacer can make a strong impact in the final stretch of the tournament.
