IPL 2025: Rajat Patidar Pays for Jitesh Sharma’s Mistake as BCCI Takes Disciplinary Action

Rajat Patidar and Pat Cummins Fined for Slow Over-Rate Offences in IPL 2025

The IPL 2025 match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow saw disciplinary action taken against both teams’ captains for slow over-rates. The BCCI confirmed the penalties through an official media release.

Rajat Patidar, who is the official captain of RCB, was fined ₹24 lakh. This was RCB’s second slow over-rate offence of the season, triggering a heavier penalty. Interestingly, in this particular match, Patidar was not leading the side on the field. Jitesh Sharma took charge as the on-field captain, while Patidar played as an Impact Substitute.

However, as per IPL rules, the official captain is still held accountable for over-rate offences. That’s why the fine was levied on Patidar despite not being in the playing XI from the start.

In addition to Patidar’s fine, every member of the RCB playing XI, including the Impact Player, was fined ₹6 lakh or 25% of their match fee whichever amount is lower.

Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins was also fined ₹12 lakh for a slow over-rate in the same match. Unlike RCB, this was SRH’s first such offence of the season. The penalty was imposed under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which deals with maintaining the required over-rate during matches.

The IPL has strict guidelines to ensure the pace of play is maintained. Teams are expected to complete their 20 overs within the allotted 90 minutes. Repeated breaches lead to increased fines and can eventually result in match suspensions for captains.

With the tournament nearing its business end, teams will be looking to avoid further penalties. Captains will now have to manage their bowling units more efficiently, especially with playoff spots on the line.
