CCI Clears RCB Sale, Aditya Birla-Led Consortium Set to Take Over in USD 1.78 Billion Deal
CCI clears RCB sale as an Aditya Birla-led consortium nears a USD 1.78 billion takeover, pending final BCCI approval.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) is one of the most well-loved and followed teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL), with a massive fan following not just in Bengaluru but all over the world. Established in 2008, RCB has built a reputation as a fan-favourite team, despite not winning any IPL trophies yet.
The team was initially called Royal Challengers Bangalore, but in 2024, the name was slightly changed to "Bengaluru" as the team believed it would bring better luck. RCB is owned by United Spirits, a subsidiary of Diageo. Their signature team colours are red, black, and gold.
RCB has had its share of ups and downs in the IPL. Despite reaching the finals three times, they are yet to win an IPL title, which has been a long-standing talking point among their fans. The team has had several star players over the years, with the most famous being Virat Kohli. Kohli has been an essential part of the team since its inception, serving as captain for several seasons. Even though he stepped down from the captaincy, he continues to play a key role in the team’s performance.
In the first IPL auction in 2008, RCB made headlines by picking up some big names like Rahul Dravid and Jacques Kallis. However, it was Virat Kohli, bought as a U19 player, who became the face of the franchise. RCB secured his services for $30,000 (in 2008). Under Kohli’s leadership, RCB reached the IPL finals in 2011, 2016, and 2022 but unfortunately lost on all three occasions.
In 2021, RCB announced Faf du Plessis as their new captain. Under his leadership, the team has shown improved consistency, making it to the playoffs regularly. Du Plessis has been instrumental in leading the team and shaping the future of RCB alongside experienced players like Glenn Maxwell and Mohammed Siraj.
One of the defining features of RCB is their loyal fan base, known as the “RCB Army.” RCB has one of the most active fan followings in the IPL, and their supporters can often be heard chanting "Ee Sala Cup Namde" (This time the cup is ours) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru has also invested heavily in nurturing young talent. The team has a strong presence in community engagement, running several cricket academies to develop the next generation of cricketers. They are involved in multiple social initiatives as well, focusing on environmental issues and charitable work.
The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) has a cricket academy in Bengaluru which is located at:
