IND vs SA 2025: Worry for India as Hardik Pandya Picks Up Injury Concern Before Cuttack T20I Opener

Hardik Pandya misses final training with minor discomfort as India prepare for high scoring Cuttack T20I vs South Africa.

India had a small worry on the eve of the first T20I in Cuttack as Hardik Pandya felt discomfort during training. Early signs suggest it is precautionary, but his status remains a key talking point before the game against South Africa.

Hardik had only just returned from a left quadriceps injury from the 2025 Asia Cup. He was cleared to play last week and even bowled full spells in two Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy games for Baroda.

In Cuttack, he bowled for around 20 minutes during an individual session. He then felt some discomfort and received treatment. After that he only batted, which raised concern inside the Indian camp.

He skipped India’s final training session before the match. Team sources say the move was precautionary and that there is no sign of a serious issue. Still, India will be careful with him, given how important he is for the 2026 T20 World Cup plans.

India do not have a strong backup for his role at the moment. Nitish Kumar Reddy has not made much impact as an all rounder, so Hardik’s availability gives the team better balance.

Shubman Gill trained well after recovering from a neck problem. He faced Jasprit Bumrah and local bowlers for a long net session and looked comfortable.

Suryakumar Yadav, Jitesh Sharma, Washington Sundar, Abhishek Sharma, and Tilak Varma also had busy sessions. They spent time batting and working on their part time bowling.

The Barabati Stadium will host its first game on a fresh red soil pitch. It is expected to be bouncy under lights and could lead to a high scoring contest. India have lost both T20Is they have played here against South Africa, so they will want a better result this time.

India may open with Gill and Abhishek Sharma. This means Sanju Samson could miss out if India stick to this combination. For South Africa, Aiden Markram returns to lead the side. Anrich Nortje is also set for his first match since the 2024 T20 World Cup final.
