IND vs NZ 2026: Rishabh Pant Ruled Out of ODI Series Against New Zealand After Abdominal Injury
Rishabh Pant is ruled out of the full ODI series vs New Zealand with an abdominal muscle tear after getting injured in practice.
Rishabh Pant has been ruled out of the entire three-match ODI series against New Zealand after picking up an abdominal injury during a practice session in Vadodara on Saturday, January 10.
The setback comes just hours before the first ODI, dealing a big blow to India’s plans, especially in the middle order and behind the stumps.
Pant was injured during an extended net session at the BCA B ground. He was struck just above the waist by a sharp delivery from a throwdown specialist while preparing for the series.
Those present at the ground said Pant immediately grimaced in pain and dropped to his knees. The session was halted as concern spread quickly among teammates and staff.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir and members of the medical team rushed to check on him. After brief treatment on the field, Pant walked off slowly and left the venue for further assessment.
An MRI scan later confirmed a right-sided strain with an internal oblique muscle tear. The diagnosis was finalised after an online consultation with specialist Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala.
The injury has ruled Pant out of all three ODIs against New Zealand. Early reports suggest the recovery period will take at least 10 days, ruling out any quick return during the series.
Pant will take a few days of rest before reporting to the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. He will undergo further assessment there and begin a structured rehabilitation programme.
His absence leaves a clear gap in India’s line-up. Pant has been a key figure as a wicketkeeper-batter, offering left-handed balance and the ability to change games quickly in the middle overs.
The team management is expected to name a replacement soon. Ishan Kishan is the frontrunner, given his experience in ODIs and familiarity with the squad.
India will now have to reshuffle their combination ahead of the opening match, with the focus on managing the transition without one of their most impactful players.
