Joe Root surpasses Sachin Tendulkar to become top run-scorer in India-England Tests in England with 1,579 runs

Joe Root has now stamped his authority as the new run-machine on English soil. On Day 2 of the ongoing first Test between England and India at Headingley, Root broke a long-standing record held by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar.

The former England captain went past Tendulkar’s tally of 1,575 runs in India-England Test matches played in England. Root needed just two runs to surpass the milestone and achieved it shortly after coming to bat in the third session on Friday.

Joe Root also leads the overall chart for most runs in India-England Tests (home and away combined). He has scored 2,862 runs in 56 innings so far, while Sachin Tendulkar managed 2,535 runs in this iconic rivalry.

Despite his record-breaking achievement, Root’s stay at the crease in this innings didn’t last long. He was dismissed for 28 by Jasprit Bumrah, marking the 10th time the Indian pacer has removed him in Test cricket, the most times Root has been dismissed by any bowler in this format.
