Devon Conway played a scintillating innings of unbeaten 152 to engineer a memorable run-chase for New Zealand against England in the 2023 World Cup opener at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.
The southpaw opening batter belted 19 boundaries and sent three deliveries soaring over the ropes, during his long stay on the crease. He also combined forces with Rachin Ravindra to put on a record 273-run partnership.
Notably, Conway’s century in the match not only secured the convincing victory for New Zealand but also helped him go past the likes of legendary batters Sachin Tendulkar and Stephen Fleming to achieve a unique milestone.
Devon Conway notched up his fifth ODI century in style, setting a new career-best score with his match-winning 152* against defending champions England in Ahmedabad. In achieving this, he etched his name in history as the first batter ever to score over 150 in a successful run-chase during a men’s World Cup match.
Back in the 2015 World Cup, Sri Lankan Lahiru Thirimanne had previously notched up an unbeaten 139* against England, joining the ranks of batting legends Stephen Fleming and Sachin Tendulkar, who had scored 134* (in 2003) and 127* (in 1996) respectively during their illustrious careers.
