Gautam Gambhir in Battle with WV Raman for India’s Head Coach Position

WV Raman is now seen as a serious contender alongside Gautam Gambhir for the head coach position.

Gautam Gambhir, a former India opener and the leading candidate for the head coach role, faces competition from WV Raman, who is also being interviewed by the BCCI recently.

Gambhir, who guided the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their third IPL title alongside Shreyas Iyer and the team, became a leading contender in the selection process.

However, recent reports reveal that the BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) also interviewed former cricketer WV Raman for the head coach position on Tuesday, June 18.

Initially believed to be the sole contender for the head coach position, Gambhir was a strong candidate. However, News18 reports that both Gambhir and Raman were interviewed by top BCCI officials for the prestigious role.

“Gambhir had a virtual interview but Raman’s presentation was very impressive and detailed. The CAC is likely to interview an overseas candidate tomorrow. Gambhir has the edge but Raman’s presentation was very thorough,” a BCCI official was quoted as saying.

“Yes, the head coach has a big say in these appointments because he would want people he is comfortable working with. Having said that, it’s not that straightforward and the BCCI too can propose their own candidates or people they think are ideal for the job. Ultimately it will be Gautam Gambhir, who is likely to become the coach, who would decide his team,” the source added.

Additional interviews and meetings are scheduled before the BCCI makes its final decision. The new head coach is expected to be announced by the BCCI within the next few days.
