Four Batsmen Who Have Been Dismissed on 99 in The History Of IPL
In the 13-year history of the Indian Premier League (IPL), there have only been 4 instances of a batsman getting out for 99.
The 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to begin with the defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the tournament opener at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on April 09.
Nervous nineties is an occurrence in cricket that is almost as old as the sport itself. Since Australian Clem Hill became the first international batsman to get out for 99 in a Test match in 1902, many have fallen prey to the unlucky number in cricket.
From the likes of Sachin Tendulkar to Michael Slater, cricket has seen some absolute greats of the game failing to escape the travesty of 99. The 13 editions of the Indian Premier League (IPL) have also seen 4 such instances.
Here are the four instances when batsman dismissed on 99 and missed his century by just 1 run in IPL:
Virat Kohli – 99 vs Delhi Daredevils, 2013
Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli had also missed his century by just 1 runs in IPL 2013 against Delhi Daredevils. He became the first man to be dismissed on 99 in an IPL game. The match was at his home ground in Delhi against the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals).
Kohli, who was 47 off 43 at that point of time, seemed to have got a superhuman injection between the overs as he raced to 99 off just 58 deliveries and taking RCB total to 183. Kohli needed 2 runs to complete his hundred off the final ball but, in the end, was run-out while going for the suicidal 2nd run. However, Kohli and his batting partner AB de Villiers’ onslaught was good enough for RCB to win the game by 4 runs to keep them in contention for the playoffs.
Prithvi Shaw – 99 vs Kolkata Knight Riders, 2019
It was a heartbreaking moment for young Prithvi Shaw when he was dismissed on 99 against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in Delhi back in IPL 2019. Shaw was in spectacular form as he smashed the KKR bowlers all around the park. Chasing a target of 186 runs, Shaw looked in great touch determined to take his side home. But he lost his concentration when he was on 99. He tried to pull a Lockie Ferguson delivery to bring up the triple-figure mark but top-edged it to be dismissed on that unlucky score.
He could have become the youngest ever centurion in the history of the league if he had completed his ton. Sunrisers Hyderabad batsman Manish Pandey currently holds the record of being the youngest player to score a hundred in the IPL at 19 years and 253 days.
Ishan Kishan – 99 vs Royal Challengers Bangalore, 2020
Mumbai Indians batsman, Ishan Kishan got an unwanted record to his name in match 10 of IPL 2020 against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Ishan was dismissed for 99 runs and became the third batsman in IPL history to get out on 99.
Kishan played an innings of his life as he registered his highest IPL score and very nearly took his side home during their run-chase of 202. Ishan Kishan, who was playing his first game of the 2020 season, was the cornerstone behind MI nearly pulling off a miraculous run-chase.
With 17 runs to get off the last 4 balls, the southpaw smashes back-to-back sixes off Isuru Udana before perishing on the very next ball as he holed out at backward square-leg for 99.
Chris Gayle – 99 vs Rajasthan Royals, 2020
After being benched for the first 7 games of the tournament, Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) batsman Chris Gayle showed the world why he is the GOAT when it comes to T20 cricket. With another 50-plus score to his name, Gayle hammered the Rajasthan Royals (RR) bowlers with huge sixes as he scored 99 runs before being dismissed by Jofra Archer in the final over of the innings.
The failure to reach the 100-run mark did get onto the nerves of Gayle who swung his bat in frustration after seeing himself being devoid of his first century of the season. As the big fella expressed his frustration on the 22-yard strip, the bat slipped out of his hand and fell a few metres away.
Here it is worth noting that we have not mentioned the batsmen who remained unbeaten on 99 in IPL history. We have provided you a list of four players who got dismissed on 99 and missed his century by just 1 run.
The two batsmen who remained unbeaten on 99 and missed their century by just 1 run are:
- Suresh Raina – 99* vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, 2013
- Chris Gayle – 99* vs Royal Challengers Bangalore, 2019
