Former Zimbabwe captain Elton Chigumbura will retire from international cricket after the conclusion of the ongoing T20 International series against Pakistan.

The Zimbabwe team, who have visited Pakistan, are playing in the three-match T20 series. On Saturday (7 November), he informed his country’s cricket board that he is going to end his cricket career after the conclusion of T20I series against Pakistan.

The 34-year-old Chigumbura has played a total of 213 ODIs, 14 Tests and 54 T20 matches for the Zimbabwe team. The T20 series in Pakistan would be the last series of his international career. The last match of the series is to be played in Rawalpindi on November 10.

“Former @ZimCricketv captain Elton Chigumbura is set to retire from international cricket at the end of the current @TheRealPCB tour,” Zimbabwe Cricket said on its official Twitter handle.

According to ZC, the all-rounder is retiring because “injuries had continued to take a toll on him as well as to pave the way for young blood in the national side”.

He is only the second player from Zimbabwe to achieve a double of 4000 runs and 100 wickets in ODI cricket, after Grant Flower.

The International Career of Chigumbura

Chigumbura made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in Bulawayo in 2004. Since then has scored 5761 runs across formats so far with two centuries in ODIs. He played his first Test match in Harare against Sri Lanka. He played his first T20 match against Bangladesh in 2006. He has taken 21 wickets, scoring 569 runs in 14 Tests.
