‘Favoure Batters Only’ – Axar Patel, Mukesh Kumar Oppose Impact Player Rule in IPL
Axar Patel and Mukesh Kumar opposes Impact Player Rule in the IPL.
Delhi Capitals’ Axar Patel and Mukesh Kumar have slammed the Impact Player rule in the IPL, saying it’s unfair. Earlier the Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting and India captain Rohit Sharma also pit forward the same point, calling this rule a nightmare for coaches and unhelpful in developing all-rounders for India.
The ‘Impact Player’ rule, implemented in 2023, gives IPL teams the option to substitute a player – either a batter or a bowler – during their innings according to the match’s demands, but it has stirred up a huge controversy this season in the cricket world.
Axar Patel expressed that the Impact Player rule has impacted his batting position and mentioned that teams aren’t as worried about losing wickets early because they can add an extra batter using this rule, giving batting a significant advantage.
“Whosoever is making the rules, they are thinking that everything will work as per batter’s convenience. Obviously, it has been difficult (for the bowlers). According to me, it’s difficult but obviously you will have the opportunity as well that you can perform well in that situation, if you have the skills then how you can use them,” Axar told PTI during a select media interaction.
“Because of the Impact sub rule, everyone gets one more batsman so they think that they will use the batsman in case, the batting unit doesn’t go well. And whosoever comes to play, they don’t take much time and starts from the first ball because they know that they have a player in seventh or eighth place,” he said.
12 Players in Playing XI Shouldn’t Be Allowed: Mukesh Kumar
Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals’ pacer Mukesh Kumar believes the rule is unfair for bowlers because there’s no relief even if you dismiss four batters quickly.
“If 12 players are not playing at the international level, then what is the need of it in IPL? With 12 players, even if four wickets are down the next player is not scared of getting out or making the team stable, they come and play their shots. So either the nature of tracks should be changed or 12 should not be allowed.”
