Comfortable Where I am Right Now: Steve Smith On Chances of Returning to Australia Captaincy Role

Steve Smith skippered the national side until he was banned for 12 months over a ball-tampering scandal in South Africa in 2018.

Australia star batsman Steve Smith said that he is not thinking about returning to captaincy and he is at a comfortable space right now. He further said that he was ‘aware’ of the discussion taking place about his return to captaincy but he is not thinking about making a comeback to captaincy and he is currently looking forward to the upcoming 4-Match Test Series against India, starting from December 17 in Adelaide.

Smith and vice-captain David Warner had resigned in the aftermath of the scandal during the Cape Town Test against South Africa in March 2018 and since then Tim Paine has been at the helm for the Test team while Aaron Finch has handled the limited-overs leadership.

“There were discussions taking place. I think JL (Justin Langer) answered the question when asked about me and captaincy, For me, I just said I am happy to do whatever is best for the team and that’s the same going forward. I do whatever I can for the team,” Smith told reporters.

Smith returned to action after serving a suspension in mid-2019 but has not captained with Paine and Finch doing fine jobs in the longer and shorter formats respectively.

“Right now, I think Tim and Finchy are doing really good jobs in both formats of the game. I’m comfortable with where I’m at right now, but as I’ve always said I will do what is best for the team.”

Earlier, Matthew Wade had expressed confidence that Smith would do a great job as captain if he returns to lead the side. At the same time, he also said that Australia players work together as a unit.

“It is not me driving the field, obviously Finch is our captain and we all work together when he plays well. So Smith has plenty of say, he has been a great captain for a long time and he will do a great job if he gets an opportunity,” Wade had said.

Smith has done his job magnificently in both ODIs and T20Is against the visiting side and now he will be aiming to present something same in the upcoming 4-Match Test Series against India, starting from December 17 in Adelaide.
