The India captain faced sharp criticism after sledging the duo during the final few minutes of Day 3, accusing them of deliberately wasting time.

Gill, speaking after days of silence, said the England openers were 90 seconds late in arriving at the crease with just seven minutes of play remaining.

“Let me clear the air,” he said. “We had seven minutes left on Day 3 and the England openers came late to the crease by 90 seconds. Most teams do these tactics, even we would have done the same. But there is a way to do it.”

He also took a dig at Crawley for calling the physio without reason.

“If you’re hit on the body, calling the physio is fair. But coming late without any reason, that doesn’t fall in the spirit of the game,” Gill added.

The 24-year-old clarified that his animated reaction wasn’t out of nowhere.

“I’m not proud of what happened. But it wasn’t random. There was a build-up and emotions took over. A lot of things happened that shouldn’t have,” Gill said.

India will face England again in the fourth Test at Manchester, starting July 23.
